Located halfway between LA and San Francisco, the scrappy little college town of San Luis Obispo (SLO) is home to 3 California Historic Landmarks. Life moves at a langorous pace in the city, National Geographic has named "The Happiest Place in America". Often overlooked, this town is now emerging as a premier daycation destination with a lot to offer.

On your way to SLO, you'll be stopped in your tracks by this imposing sight: the 581ft Morro Rock, towering over the expanse of Morro Bay. This huge volcanic plug also acts as a safe haven for endangered peregrine falcons.
Once you're in SLO, you'll be drawn to the most spiritually and historically significant site in town: the peaceful Mission San Luis Obispo de Tolosa. This 247 years old site is a parish, cemetery, school and museum all rolled into one.
Next up is the most unusual roadside attraction you're likely to ever see in your life: the Bubblegum Alley. This weird alleyway is 15-ft high and 70-ft long, and its walls are completely covered in used bubblegum! Add your own gum to the wall if you feel like it. Just try not to trip on anything while you're here!

Next, it's time to take it SLO, by fishing at Laguna Lake Park. Like most attractions, it is at walking distance from every other tourist spot in this small town. If you aren't having much luck with the rod, you can chill out at nearby picnic areas or visit the equestrian center.
SLO has preserved this remnant from the good old days: the Sunset Drive in Theater. Pull up in front of the screen and have an old-fashioned date night to remember!

With easy access to over 80 miles of beaches, it's easy to see why the locals are so happy. Drive up to Shell Beach for a seaside stroll and a quick splash. While you're here, keep an eye out for dolphins and lazy sea lions!

At Pismo Beach, swing by the incredible Monarch Butterfly Grove for stunningly spectacular sights of natural splendor. From October to February, the Eucalyptus trees of this garden get covered in 10,000 migrating butterflies!

If you're after hair-raising thrills, book yourself a ride at Oceano Dunes SVRA. Conquer the shifty terrain of the sprawling Oceano Dunes Natural Preserve in an off-road adventure you won't soon forget!

Work up a sweat exploring the wilderness around SLO, by hiking up the challenging 1,546-ft Bishop Peak. Casual hikers should opt for the easier 2.7-mile Felsman Loop to the summit of Bishop Peak.

Get in touch with nature, over at the Lake Lopez campground. At one of its 350 serene lakeside campsites, you can fire up the BBQ pit and roast marshmallows for a good time in the lap of nature.
