Charlotte was nicknamed the Queen City as a tribute by King George III to his wife Queen Charlotte of Mecklenburg- Sterlitz in 1768.

It is also referred to as ‘Hornet’s Nest’ after General Charles Cornwallis, was driven out by hostile citizens during The American Revolutionary War.
